Apr. 1 6:11 PM PT7:11 PM MT8:11 PM CT9:11 PM ET21:11 ET1:11 GMT9:11 CST6:11 PM MST8:11 PM EST8:41 PM VEN5:11 UAE (+1)8:11 PM CT-A person familiar with the negotiations says two-time All-Star shortstop Elvis Andrus has reached an agreement on a $120 million, eight-year extension with the Texas Rangers. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday night because the deal won't be finalized until after a physical. That likely won't happen until Thursday, the day before the team's home opener.
Analysis: The 24-year-old Andrus, already in his fifth major league season, could earn more than $131 million over 10 seasons. He is owed more than $11.2 million this season and next before the extension would take effect. The new deal includes a vesting option for 2023 and a chance for Andrus to opt out and become a free agent after the 2018 season when he will be 30.
Feb. 28 1:06 PM PT2:06 PM MT3:06 PM CT4:06 PM ET16:06 ET21:06 GMT5:06 CST2:06 PM MST4:06 PM EST4:36 PM VEN1:06 UAE (+1)3:06 PM CT-Andrus has been scratched because of what the club called "sensitivity in his left arm" - apparently caused by a tattoo.
Analysis: Andrus spent nine hours the two days before Thursday's spring training game against the Indians under a needle. He wanted a likeness of his late father, Emilo Andrus, who died in 1996 when Elvis was 7. Andrus tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he'll be ready to play Friday. He says: "It's a memory of my dad. I'm really proud that it's going to be on myself forever." The tattoo covers most of Andrus' left arm from the elbow to shoulder.
