Analysis: Murphy was playing second base at Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday night and trying to turn a double play when a runner slid into him. Murphy has a tear that will not need surgery, but will take four to six months to heal. The 25-year-old Murphy had been out this year because of a sprained right knee. The Mets said on Thursday that the new injury is not related to his past knee trouble. |

Murphy also had some difficulties at the plate last year after hitting .313 in 49 games as a rookie in 2008. He was down to .234 last season after an 0-for-3 night in Baltimore on June 16, but he picked it up from there. Analysis: Now sure of his spot, Murphy changed his offseason workout routine to prepare for the job. He also got some fielding lessons from 11-time Gold Glove first baseman Keith Hernandez right before spring training started. ``Keith was great. He added a lot of things to first base I hadn't ever really thought of, some things to work on,'' Murphy said. ``The biggest thing I thought was just getting to know your other infielders.'' |

Hernandez, an 11-time Gold Glove first baseman, spent two hours Monday and Tuesday instructing Murphy and Nick Evans at the Mets' training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla. General manager Omar Minaya had called Hernandez last week asking for his teaching skills. Analysis: Murphy started last season in left field and had never played first in the major leagues before May 20, when the Mets made the abrupt shift following Carlos Delgado's hip injury. The 25-year-old made 10 errors in 101 games and didn't appear comfortable around the bag. |
